Izdeyar Setna is a photographer born in Pakistan and lives in Canada. He is of the Zoroastrian community, known for his evocative portraits. He first discovered his curiosity for photography at age 10 while at boarding school in England, where he found solace in capturing life through his lens. It wasn’t until later while he was studying for his O levels that his talent was truly recognised. It was his photography teacher who urged him and made him promise to never put down his camera. Since then, Izdeyar has never looked back, taking the world by storm with his captivating images.
He received a Diploma in Photography from New England School of Photography and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Parsons School of Design in New York. He later went on to pursue the art of film making at Toronto Film School. Setna won first place and the Judges Choice Award in the American Society of Media Photography (ASMP) student competition in 2003. The following year, his work was chosen by BBC News as part of their 15 best images of 2004. In 2006, Christie’s auctioned Setna’s work for Nokia, and his photography was selected to represent Pakistan at Chobi Mela in Bangladesh. As he garnered international acclaim, his debut exhibition in 2007 was a sell-out success.
His incredible eye for capturing beauty and emotion through his lens was further showcased in the Art of Photography Show in San Diego in 2010, where his photograph was one of those selected by Natasha Egan, Director and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. His image “Holi Boy” is featured at the museum. Two further images captured by Setna are to be included in the upcoming book ‘Identities Now’, a collection of the best contemporary portrait photography selected from across the globe.
Izdeyar’s talent has also earned him prestigious assignments, such as being the official photographer for the royal family of Malaysia. As his exhibitions continue to sell out, Izdeyar remains a true creative force, celebrated and revered by supporters and industry experts alike.
